Have you ever noticed that you are exhausted at the end of the workday? Micro breaks can be the solution! When you take microbreaks throughout the day, it ensures that you have more energy to do your work and don’t go home limp and lifeless. Read on to find out what microbreaks are and what they can do for you!

What will you read in this blog?

What is a micropause?

A micropause is a very short break from 10 seconds to a maximum of 5 minutes.
A micro-break is also called a pit stop.
This very small break is meant to take your mind off your work and take a small screen work break.
These breaks help you get through the day fitter and more energetic and improve your work performance.

How do you take a micro-pause?

It is very simple to take a micro-break, getting a cup of coffee can already be a pit stop to take your mind off the work you are doing.
Other ways of taking micro-breaks include looking outside for 10 seconds or getting some fresh air for a few minutes, basically anything where you can be briefly distracted from your work and are not looking at a screen.
So what you can do during such a small break is not that difficult, but it can be difficult to take regular micropauses during a busy workday.
For taking micro breaks on time, we have the solution!

What are the benefits of micropauses?

Several studies show that taking micro-breaks/restorative moments brings significant benefits to employees:

  • More energy
  • Fewer errors
  • More relaxation
  • Higher productivity
  • More concentrated work
  • Better problem-solving ability

Taking a small break can significantly improve the work performance of display screen workers and provide many benefits (Van den Heuvel et al., 2002; Hedge et al., 2001, Thayer, 2008, Oppezzo & Schwartz, 2014).

How often should you take micropauses?

Taking frequent pit stops is very important to stay focused on your work through the workday.
But when and how often should you take micro breaks to give yourself some relaxation? This is different for each person, one person needs a small break more than another but we can keep a certain average.

  • Shorter micro-breaks of about 10 seconds can be taken more frequently, you can take these every 10 to 15 minutes.
    We also call these Energizers.
  • Micro breaks of 3 to 5 minutes can be taken every 40 to 60 minutes; we call this a concentration boost.
  • A longer micro-break of 8 to 10 minutes can be taken every 2 hours after continuous concentrated screen work, we call this a time-out.

Keep in mind that in the morning you can probably leave a little more time between microbreaks since you are often still a little fresher.
In the afternoon, you may need more micro-breaks since you have been working for a longer time.

How do you keep taking frequent micropauses?
