Can people be nudged with software that tells them when it’s time to stand or sit again? Texas A&M University conducted research on the subject.
For example, employees were found to use sit-stand desks best if they received a nudge from the WORK & MOVE software each time.

The results; WORK & MOVE and the use of sit-stand tables

*At the time of the study, WORK & MOVE was still called SitStandCOACH. In the meantime, we have expanded WORK & MOVE into a personal coach, which ensures sufficient variation between concentrated screen work and mental and physical exercise.

The software gives you insight and feedback about your computer behavior. Based on your personal needs, the software recommends an optimal work-exercise rhythm and helps you make this rhythm your own. SitStandCOACH is a standard part of the WORK & MOVE employee well-being software.

Are sit-stand desks being used optimally?

Sit-stand desks are wildly popular in offices right now. They cause employees to alternate their work posture more often and to sit still for fewer hours at a time. Consequently, these desks are primarily used to reduce sedentary behavior and improve employee health. However, using sit-stand desks is challenging. The biggest bottleneck is their use. After all, how many employees still use them (properly) when the novelty is gone? Does it then help to encourage them via a program on their computer? The American university researched exactly that with WORK & MOVE software.

The total research period was 4.5 months. After a baseline measurement of 6 weeks, the study of the effect of WORK & MOVE started for a period of 3 months. The study was conducted in two geographical locations in the US with a control group and an experimental group from Chevron.

229% more sit-stand changes

The experimental group, which received nudges through BakkerElkhuizen’s software, alternated more between standing and sitting than the control group that did not receive nudges. Both groups ran the WORK & MOVE software, but the control group did not receive sit-stand coaching.
On average, the experimental group switched positions 229% more than those who did not receive nudges. 40% of the experimental group alternated sitting and standing according to the WORK & MOVE sit-stand profile ”optimal movement.”

John van Hooft, CEO BakkerElkhuizen, on the results of the scientific study:

“We knew that the use of our WORK & MOVE software would encourage users to make optimal use of their sit-stand desk. It’s great that scientific research now fully supports our hypothesis. Our software demonstrably contributes to the mental and physical fitness of knowledge workers. We believe in a preventive organization-wide approach. By focusing on people & work, you create lasting sustainable employability, vitality and well-being for both employee and employer. By deploying our practical and scalable solutions, we enable organizations to achieve sustainable peak performance.”

The effect of alternating sitting and standing

These findings indicate that the use of smart WORK & MOVE nudges can indeed be used to motivate employees to change their behavior with regard to alternating sitting and standing. The effect? The experimental group reported that they had a significant reduction in body discomfort, increased focus and reduced fatigue with only a modest increase in total standing time, but precisely due to frequent alternation of sitting and standing.

Conclusion

Survey data from the experimental group showed that ~71% felt that the WORK & MOVE software was helpful in using the sit-to-stand workstation and increased the transition from sitting to standing as well as the transition from sitting to standing, ~83% of the experimental group increased standing time using the WORK & MOVE software, while ~45% felt that WORK & MOVE had increased mental awareness by standing more often.
Moreover, nearly 75% of the experimental group indicated they would like to continue using the WORK & MOVE software after the study.
